It is not as easy to get pregnant as most couples might think. The research shows that the probability of two normally fertile people conceiving with properly timed sex is about 15% per month. About 90% of fertile couples successfully conceive within one year. Fertility consultations are therefore generally not necessary for couples who have been trying to conceive for less than a year (unless other red flags are present or your at-home sperm testing is abnormal).

Most experts agree that couples that have been trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant for at least 12 months should consult with fertility doctors. Since only 10% of fertile couples don’t get pregnant within the first year, there is a good chance that a male or female factor may be present that is making it difficult to get pregnant. Both the male and female partners should consult with physicians who specialize in male and female fertility, respectively.
