Sometimes it can be difficult for couples to decide when to seek help from a female fertility expert. On the one hand, it can take time and patience to get pregnant and there is often no reason to rush into medical testing and fertility treatments. On the other hand, sometimes time is a very important factor, and getting evaluated and treated early can make a huge difference. Here are some general guidelines.
Female partner age. Unlike men, who make new sperm their entire lives, women are born with all the eggs they’ll ever produce. The result is that female fertility declines as they (and their eggs) age. For most women, fertility gradually declines in their early 30s and more quickly after age 35. For this reason, women who are 35 or older should have a very low threshold to consult with a female fertility expert.
Irregular menstrual cycles. Irregular menstrual cycles can be a sign that ovulation is not occurring as it should. It could also signify the presence of other medical problems. An irregular menstrual cycle can also make it very challenging to effectively time sex to ovulation. Women with irregular cycles should see OB-GYNs or female fertility specialists for evaluation, irrespective of how long they have been trying to conceive.
Recurrent miscarriages. Miscarriages can be emotionally and physically difficult to go through. They can occur for a variety of reasons related to hormone levels, uterine anatomy, or ovarian function. Miscarriages can also occur if the embryo had a genetic abnormality. In many cases, the cause of miscarriage is not clear. Women who have had more than two-lifetime miscarriages should be evaluated by a female fertility specialist to look for reversible or treatable causes as well as to rule out other medical issues.
